The 2024 humanitarian response plan launched on April 16 in Yaoundé will target the most urgent needs linked to the impact of the Lake Chad basin conflict, the crisis in the English-speaking regions, as well as the repercussions of the influx of refugees to the East, in Adamaoua and the North.
According to figures from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 3.4 million people will need humanitarian assistance in Cameroon in 2024. Hence the appeal launched to donors by the government and partners humanitarian workers of the country this April 16 in Yaoundé. It was during the official launching ceremony of the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan (PRH) for Cameroon chaired by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji.
Aiming to respond to the humanitarian needs of 2.3 million people out of the 3.4 counted, the PRH 2024 targets the most urgent needs linked to the impact of the conflict in the Lake Chad basin, the crisis in the northern regions West and South West, the influx of Central African refugees, epidemics and climatic shocks. It also targets the nearly one million internally displaced people. Not forgetting that because of its hospitality, the country welcomes nearly half a million refugees and asylum seekers and that the United Nations estimates that 2.5 million people will face acute food insecurity. in 2024. This, despite certain positive trends recorded in some regions.
The result of a multisectoral process, this humanitarian response in 2024 will target interventions in the areas of shelter and essential household items, education, nutrition, protection, health, and food security. As well as water, hygiene and sanitation, protection and multi-sectoral response to refugees. Hence the call for a renewed commitment from the entire humanitarian community and donors to meet these vital humanitarian needs. “We must also contribute to promoting, exploring and implementing innovative and sustainable solutions to address the complex and prolonged effects of displacement, in cooperation with national authorities, development actors and international financial institutions,” recalled , Coulibaly Siaka, the humanitarian coordinator for Cameroon. “In 2024, millions of lives depend on our continued solidarity with those who need it most. I invite you all to consider how we could further alleviate the suffering of populations affected by the crises in Cameroon,” he added.
